If you don't find the information you need, please contact us

What happens after I order (and what documents do I need to send you)?

An automated email will be sent immediately (to the email address on the order form) confirming that we have received your initial payment. Your order will be processed within one working day. Once your order has been processed we'll confirm by sending a further email. A printed invoice will follow by post.

You don't need to send us anything until you receive your invoice in the post. It will contain full instructions plus a stamped, addressed envelope. When we arrange the transfer we'll need your V5C Vehicle Registration Document, MOT certificate (if applicable) and a note of the expiry date of your tax disc (or a copy of the disc if it's less than three weeks old).

How long will the transfer take?

Most transfers are completed within 5/10 working days from receipt of your documents and cleared funds. DVLA will write to you direct confirming when the transfer is complete and enclosing your new tax disc; you can then fit your new number plates.

It's a gift - can I keep it a surprise?

Yes, personalised number plates make a great surprise gift! However, there are a few points that we need to mention. Please don't use an email address that the recipient is likely to access! If the recipient lives at the same address as you, we can post the invoice etc. to a different address. If there's a chance that the recipient may answer the telephone number that you give us, please tell us so we can mark our records.

If it's a surprise gift, it's usually best to have the registration supplied on a certificate for transfer later. If we try to complete the transfer beforehand there are several potential problems (if the recipient is also the vehicle's registered keeper). Firstly, you will have to obtain the vehicle documents and secondly, DVLA will send confirmation of the transfer and the new tax disc direct to the registered keeper.

Can I buy a registration mark to go on a car at some future date?

We can supply the registration mark on a certificate.

Note: certificates have a maximum life of 12 months (from the date they were issued - not from when you order) but they can be renewed by us for a further 12 months (current fee £10 + VAT + DVLA fee £25).

How do I get number plates?

We don't insist that you buy your plates from us but we can supply them if you wish.

Note: to comply with the law, you must provide ID and proof of entitlement ... visit DVLA's site for more details (opens in new window) >

Can a registration containing a year identifier go on any car?

No, personalised number plates must not make vehicles look younger; however, the reverse does not apply.

For example, if you own a "T" registered car you can transfer a plate with a "A", prefix on to it but not one with a "Y" prefix.

What's the correct spacing for the letters and figures?

Here are examples of the various formats showing the correct spacing (we have entered an * where the space should go):

2*ABC     A2*ABC     ABC*2A     AB51*ABC

You must not miss space or misrepresent your registration (e.g. by using a bolt to make one of the letters or figures look like something else).

If you don't display your registration correctly you could be fined or even have your right to display the registration mark taken away from you!

Can you make a transfer to a vehicle with no tax and/or MOT?

Sorry .. no

Can I transfer to a vehicle registered in Northern Ireland?

Yes, but there will be additional fees, please contact us for more information.

Can I assign a registration mark to a car that I don't own?

Technically, yes, but you should bear in mind that registration marks are not items of property - they are assigned to vehicles not people!

The registered keeper of a vehicle is the only person who has entitlement to the registration and who can transfer it to another vehicle or to a certificate. So, if you assign it to someone else's car, the registered keeper effectively becomes the new "owner"!

Can cherished numbers be transferred to a car that's leased?

If a registration is transferred to a leased vehicle the entitlement to it will pass to the leasing company if they are the registered keeper. So before transfer you need to be absolutely certain that the leasing company has no objection and that they will co-operate fully in any subsequent transfer back to you!

What happens to my old registration number?

You can keep your old registration by transferring it to another vehicle (that you own) or to a retention certificate (DVLA fee £80 or £105) but obviously this isn't a practical proposition unless the original number has some value!

Normally the old registration is effectively "scrapped" but, if you transfer your personalised number to another car, DVLA usually reallocate the old number anyway - free of charge (although there's no guarantee).

Are there special rules for motorcycles and mopeds?

No (not since the rules changed in October 2001).

Can cherished numbers be transferred to "Q" registered vehicles?

Sorry .. no ("Q" plates are issued when the origin or age is uncertain).

What combinations of letters and figures are possible?

UK mainland registrations are available in the following formats: dateless, prefixed and suffixed; plus, of course, the current format which was introduced in September 2001.

Dateless

Originally, registrations didn't contain a year letter or identifier.

They contained a maximum of 6 digits and a minimum of 2 in the following combinations, with either the letters or figures coming first:

3 letters + 1,2 or 3 figures

or, 2 letters + 1,2,3 or 4 figures

or, 1 letter + 1,2,3 or 4 figures

Examples: 123 ABC  |  12 AC  |  23 A  |  AC 3377  |  8 A

Prefixed/Suffixed

These are registrations that contain a year letter to identify the age of the vehicle. They were originally issued between 1963 and 2001.

In the examples below, "A" signifies the year of registration.

A2 BCD  |  BCD 2A

"A" at the front (prefix) was issued in 1983/4

"A" at the end (suffix) was issued in 1963.

They all contain a year letter, 1 to 3 figures and 3 letters (excluding Q, I and Z)

Current format

Current registrations are ALL in the following format:

AB51 BCD

The first 2 letters identify the area

The figures identify the year ..

51 = second part of 2001
02 = first part of 2002
52 = second part of 2002 etc.

The last 3 letters are random.

Registrations from Northern Ireland are all "dateless" and contain an "I" or "Z". They can be assigned to a UK mainland registered vehicle (but not directly if they are on a certificate issued in Northern Ireland).

What happens if I sell my car?

Before you sell your car, you can transfer the registration mark to another vehicle (DVLA fee £80) or you can transfer it to a retention certificate (DVLA fee £105). Forms are available at your local DVLA office. If you sell the car before transfer, entitlement to the registration will pass to the new owner!

What happens if my car is stolen or written off?

If it's stolen and has not been recovered in 12 months you can apply to have the registration mark re-assigned. If it's written off you need to arrange a transfer before it's scrapped.

In either case you should liaise with both DVLA and your insurers at the outset to ensure you don't lose your registration as certain conditions need to be met!
